Help us shape a sustainable urban future for Northeast India
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Urban mobility systems depend on a vast network of workers—cyclists, gig workers, bus drivers, mechanics, and informal service providers—yet their livelihoods are often precarious, undervalued, and overlooked in planning processes. Many of these workers operate in the informal economy, facing income instability, lack of social protection, unsafe working conditions, and limited access to growth opportunities.
At the same time, cities are transitioning toward more sustainable mobility systems, but the potential for these transitions to generate inclusive and dignified livelihoods remains underdeveloped. There is a clear gap in recognising, strengthening, and expanding livelihood opportunities that align with sustainable transport.
OUR APPROACH
PURVCA’s Livelihoods vertical focuses on identifying, strengthening, and creating sustainable mobility-linked livelihoods in urban contexts. We pay particular attention to groups that are often excluded from formal systems or miss out on emerging opportunities—such as gig workers, cycle repair technicians, delivery riders, and informal mobility service providers.
This program positions livelihoods not as a by-product of mobility systems, but as a central component of equitable and sustainable urban development.
